Branch Report To North East Regional Learning Committee 9th October 2008

At last, Leeds Learning Centre is up and running again, at the moment we are running a ICT Basic skills for life course, which runs for five weeks, this is free to all students and forms a basis for an ongoing assessment for students who would like to progress onto fee paying courses after Christmas. The Tutors then have the time in five weeks to determine students level of skills and signpost them onto the correct course for them.

For others, it is a chance to try out computing to decide if it is for them before they commit themselves further, while brushing up on their basic skills.

We have always had poor interest when advertising basic Literacy and Numeracy classes as people at Royal Mail are not willing to come forward and admit they have a problem with reading, when our job entails this as a basic requirement, but with this course it is linking basic skills in computing, so there is not as much stigma attached.

We have two Tutors at the moment, this is always an issue when it comes to delivering the same content in classes and providing feedback to the provider is vital to ensure all students are receiving the same information, whichever class they attend. One of the Tutors does seem to have a different teaching style to the other and this has to be addressed by the provider as his style could potentially put people off who have come back to learn late in life.

Currently we are running two classes on Tuesdays 11am - 1pm and 3pm - 5pm and Thursdays 11am - 1pm. All classes are well attended. It is unfortunate that we cannot run an evening class for night staff, but as Tutors need to finish at at least 9pm and most of the night staff don't start their shift until 10.30pm we only had interest from two people. Therefore it was not feasible/cost effective to run an evening course.
